Itinerary

DAY 01: ARRIVE IN BEIJING

Meet and greet on arrival in Beijing and transfer to your selected hotel by your local tour representative. Day at leisure. Take dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight at your hotel. (D)

DAY 02: BEIJING

Sightseeing today includes a visit to the remarkable Tiananmen Square, located at the centre of Beijing City. Stroll past the Tiananmen Tower, Monument to the People’s Heroes, Great Hall of the People, Chairman Mao Zedong Memorial Hall and see the national flag raising ceremony. To the north of the square lies the treasure-filled Forbidden City that was the Imperial Palace of Emperors for over 500 years. With some 8700 rooms this complex represents the largest and best preserved collection of ancient buildings in China from the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

This afternoon experience the perfect harmony between architecture, nature and the peaceful spirit of the Chinese people at the Temple of Heaven. Built in 1420, the 18th year of the reign of Ming emperor Yongle it was extended and renovated during the reigns of the Ming emperor Jiajing and Qing emperor Qianlon. Covering an area of 273 hectares, it is the largest architectural complex in the world used for rituals to pay homage to the God of Heaven. This evening, take dinner at a local restaurant. DAY 03: BEIJING

Drive to the Juyong Pass this morning. Walk along the Great Wall of China to appreciate 2000 years of historical significance and admire the panoramic views. The Great Wall is China’s most iconic attraction that stretches over 6500 kilometres from the Shanhaiguan Pass on the east coast to the Gobi Desert in the west.

Visit a Jade Factory and Ming Tombs (Changling Tomb) consisting of 13 tombs of the emperors of the Ming Dynasty after the capital was moved from Nanjing to Beijing. This is unique as it is the only huge palace made of camphor wood. Return to Beijing for a short photo-stop at the Olympic Park, where you can see the outside view of the National Stadium (Bird’s Nest) and National Aquatics Center (Water Cube). Have dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight at your hotel. (B/D)

DAY 04: BEIJING – XIAN

This morning, visit the Liulichang District that was once a favorite haunt for scholars, painters and calligraphers who gathered there to write, compile and purchase books, as well as to paint and compose poetry during Ming and Qing Dynasties. Recent renovations have transformed this place into a popular tourist attraction with an antique market that resembles a Chinese village comprising private and state run shops filled with a variety of Chinese folk arts such as paintings, calligraphy, pottery, carpets, vases, books, scrolls and chops.

Continue to Da Shi Lan, one of Beijing’s most famous old-fashioned streets that have a history dating back some 580 years. Built in 1430, the 18th year of Emperor Yong Le’s rule during the Ming Dynasty, Da Shi Lan today is 375 meters long and home to some 26 shops featuring a large variety of goods from silks and hats through to shoes and souvenirs. Afternoon transfer to the airport. Fly to Xian. Meet and greet on arrival. Dinner at a local restaurant. Transfer to and overnight at your selected hotel. (B/D)

DAY 05: XIAN

Depart for a full day tour with a visit to the China’s richest historic area, recognized by UNESCO as the eighth wonder of the world, the amazing Museum of the Terracotta Warriors. The Terracotta Army in Xi’an was created to guard Emperor Qin Shihuang’s tomb and to protect him in the afterlife. It is estimated that there are more than 7,000 life-sized terracotta figures and horses buried in the mausoleum, and you can see this spectacular site on this full-day tour! The museum complex features extensive exhibits, artifacts and a movie of the rich history of the site.

Afternoon visit to a specialist art lacquer work shop followed by a visit to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, an important Buddhist pagoda built during the Tang Dynasty. Take dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight at your hotel. (B/D)

DAY 06: XIAN – CHONGQING – EMBARKATION

Morning visit to the Shaanxi History Museum and Ancient City Wall. Transfer to the airport in the afternoon and fly to Chongqing. Transfer to the pier on the Yangtze River. Embark and overnight on your cruise boat. (B)

DAY 07: YANGTZE RIVER CRUISE

After a safety, orientation & river briefing presentation sail from Chongqing this morning. The first shore excursion of the cruise occurs either at Fengdu, Shibaozhai or Wanzhou, depending on local river conditions. Shibaozhai – with its impressive wooden pagoda, appropriately named “The Pearl of the Yangtze”. Fengdu – visiting the new relocation village built for families who have moved as a result of the Yangtze’s rising waters brought about by the Three Gorges Dam. Overnight on board (B/L/D)

DAY 08: THREE GORGES & LESSER GORGES

Cruise through the Three Gorges, one of nature’s most extraordinary sculptures. The Qutang Gorge is the shortest – 5 miles, narrowest -500 feet and most dramatic. Board a smaller craft for an excursion to the impressive Lesser Three Gorges viz. the Dragon Gate, Misty and Emerald Gorges on the Daning River one of the Yangtze’s tributaries before returning to your cruise boat. The 25-mile long Wu Gorge is known for its quiet beauty, forest-covered mountains, and cliffs so sheer that the sun barely penetrates the precipices. Xiling Gorge is the longest – 41 miles and the deepest of the Three Gorges. In the evening, sail through the Three Gorges Dam ship locks. Overnight on board. (B/L/D)

DAY 09: THREE GORGES DAM – YICHANG, SHANGHAI

Visit the Jade Buddha Temple, located in crowded Shanghai City and named after its two bejeweled white jade Buddha. Carved from a single piece of white jade, the seated jade Buddha statue is translucent with a solemn expression, displaying the excellent skill and extraordinary art of Chinese people.

Morning visit to the Three Gorges Dam at Sandouping, the largest in the world. Sail on to arrive at Yichang in the late morning and disembark. Transfer to the airport and fly to Shanghai. Meet and greet on arrival and transfer to your selected hotel. Afternoon at leisure. Have dinner at a local restaurant this evening. Overnight at your hotel. (B/D)

DAY 10: SHANGHAI

The Yuyuan Garden has many scenic courtyards decorated with baroque rockery, pools and flora that are all connected by corridors and passageways. Stop by a Pearl Factory before proceeding to Nanjing Road, China’s premier shopping street – a must-see metropolitan destination that attracts thousands of high fashion shoppers from all over the world, starts at the Bund in the east and ends six kilometres west at the junction of Jingan Temple and Yan’an West Street with People’s Square in the middle

End the day with a visit to The Bund, Shanghai’s renowned waterfront district and landmark. Situated on the west bank of the Huangpu River and overlooking ultra-modern Pudong to the east, the Bund’s most famous and attractive sights are the various buildings that reflect the rich architectural styles from Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Classic and the Renaissance periods. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and overnight at your hotel. (B/D)

DAY 11: SHANGHAI – DEPARTURE

Breakfast at the hotel. You are at leisure until you transfer to Pudong International Airport for your onward flight. Itinerary ends. (B)
